1. ACFS(Tas) was involved in the first Chinese
Cultural Day, promoted by the Melbourne Chinese Consulate. It was held at The
Friends School. Distinguished guests were led by His Excellency the Governor of
Tasmania, the Hon. Peter Underwood, and the Chinese Consul General, Mr Shen.
About 700 children were involved in activities and workshops that were given by
local and interstate presenters. The day was followed by a Buffet Dinner for 90
people.
2. On August 27 the Tasmanian Premier, the Hon
David Bartlett, opened an exhibition of painting and calligraphy by Jao Tsung-i
of the University of Hong Kong. Members of the Society joined the packed
audience in the Tasmanian Museum and art Gallery; the guests included 70 people
from Hong Kong. Professor Jao is a world-renowned scholar and artist, now aged
94; he said that on his way in from the airport he had been greeted by a rainbow
and was so struck by the light in Tasmania .
3. Members are participating in a new local
monthly publication in color Chinese News Tasmania. The latest
edition has 22 pages and is a most welcome link for Chinese Tasmanians and
their friends and families here and in China.(It's not produced by
ACFS, but members are featured or write for
it.)
